After the Miss Universe 2016 pageant, media speculations have circulated about the next edition. Australian businessman Troy Barbagallo, who presides over the Miss Universe Australia organization, told the Herald Sun newspaper that he made an offer to IMG - co-owner of the contest - for Australia to host the 2017 edition, and has also assured that the company had a great interest in the offer. If the negotiation will be materialized, possible host cities will be Sydney and Melbourne. This would be the second time Australia will be hosting the pageant, the first one in 1979 which was held in Perth.
On May 25, 2017, the Philippine Department of Tourism said that the Miss Universe Organization offered to host the pageant again in the Philippines. The country hosted the Miss Universe 2016 pageant. The Miss Universe Organization was reportedly pleased with the Philippines' hosting of the previous pageant claiming it overshadowed the pre-events of the 2017 Super Bowl. On June 22, 2017, the DOT announced that they will officially decline to host the pageant this year.
